Brief reviews and thoughts about children's and young adult books by Minnesota authors (or illustrators), or about Minnesota. If I get the urge, it may also include ideas for using the books in the classroom. The emphasis is on books published since 1995, but don't be surprised if an oldie-but-goodie slips in occasionally.

Wishing I Was Fishing
If winter is getting to you, this story will help you think ahead to spring and summer. In this gentle story, a father and son set out on the first fishing trip of the season. From preparing the boat, to launching it, to catching the first fish; this is an adventure shared by father and son. Written by Eva Wells, illustrated by Chandra Dale, this is a story for dads to read to their young sons when fishing season draws near.

B is for Battle Cry
The Civil War is the central subject of this alphabet book. From Abe Lincoln, to Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, Ironclads, Nurses, Spies, Vicksburg, and more; each topic includes a brief poem and additional text to explain the topic. Written and illustrated by the Minnesota team of Patricia Bauer and David Geister, this could supplement American history units at the upper elementary level.
